This is a book I read years ago when I was in elementary school. It is out of print, and has been for a long time.
What amazes me most is that I don't remember it being a spectacular book, yet whenever it pops up on Ebay or Amazon, the going rate is between $200 and $300 dollars.

There is one book I would undoubtedly spend $200 dollars on if it ever went out of print and I somehow lost my copies (I own three. 2 HC and 1 PB) That book is:

ReplyDeleteI don't know if it's out of print, but I loved E.L. Konigsburg's From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. It was published in the 60's, so I'm guessing a first edition would be outlandish, but I'd love to own it.

I've actually been looking for paperback copies of Monica Furlong's Juniper and Wise Child, which I read when I was a kid, and I had a Barnes and Noble gift card so I decided to check it out. Guess how much a brand-new paperback costs? I nearly dropped to the floor... it was something like $200. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI've paid $200 several times for books. Not necessarily classics, but they were worth it to me.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything I'd need to own that much. I do have one book that I paid about 30 or 40 pounds for back in the 80s in the UK. That was a lot for a book then, but I recently found out that it's since become something of a collectors' item. It is also the one on my shelves that I would be most reluctant to part with.

I've never thought about out of print books. Wow. They are rather pricey.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about OOP books either! That is alot! I find often times, if the book is well loved enough, they redo a printing at some point. I still have the original 1980's LJ smith books and they look and are formatted completely different than the new versions.
ReplyDeleteI still have some of my books from when I was a kid. I don't know if they're worth a lot of money or not - and I don't care. They're worth a lot to me! :)

I have the silver crown, just bought it for a dollar (please don't hate me) but haven't read it yet. Now, I definitely will. It is SOOO incredibly sad to see good books go out of print. My personal favorite is The Seal Child by Sylvia Peck.
